DAY 1: A refreshing start to the three day expedition will be visiting some nice open spaces which will prove to be very rewarding. We set off on our journey for active pasture fields and riverside edges; good opportunities for Red breasted Blackbird, Scarlet Macaws, Southern lapwing, Laughing Falcon, Crane Hawk and many other species.
DAY 2: A half day of birding within the grounds of Carara National Park. We will take breakfast on the go with an early start at the Meandrica's trail. The trail is a complex variety of forest ranging from old secondary to abandoned pasture fields, which enhances our possibilities of a larger number of species and families. The highlights on this trail are many, but some of the species are: Royal Flycather, Fiery Billed Aracari, Antbirds, five species of Trogons, Black Bellied Wren, Boat Billed Heron, Yellow Billed Cotinga and hundreds more...
After a well deserved lunch we will travel a short distance and visit Bijagual's area for the King Vulture, Zone Tailed Hawk and few other raptors. Followed by a hike to an area of old growth forest on a system of 3 interconnected trails with numerous new species such as: Great Tinamou, Ruddy Quail Dove, Golden crowned Spadebill, Orange collared, Blue crowned, Red capped, Thrushlike Manakins, more Trogons and Antbirds like Streaked Chested Antpitta, Black Faced Antrush and the list goes on. A great trail for endemics.
DAY 3: The Mangrove Birding Tour is designed to get special birds such as: Mangrove Hummingbird, (the only inland Costa Rica true endemic), Mangrove Warbler, Vireos, Flycathers and most of the Herons, Egret and dozens of wader from North America but some other birds are Trogons, Becards, etc.( Please, check the full birdlist ). Also a great tour for those with physical limitations and a must for bird photographers. The mangrove boat tour runs 4 times a day with a maximum of 3 hours each tour, the boat has a maximum capability of 30 people with guide a boat driver, it has life jackets, a canopy built in for sun/rain protection. This tour is oriented to birders who care for the sighting and the quality. We will take the 6 am tour in order to get the most of the day. The rest of the day we will come back to Carara and other open space trails.
